Work Title: Intern Physician, First Year

Supervisor: Dra. Mirna  de Abood,

Job Description:
In order to be a licensed physician in Panama one of the requirements is to do two years of internship. I did my first year on the Metropolitan Hospital Complex of the National Security System in Panama City. I took my elective rotations in two months of Internal Medicine Wards and one month on the Medical ICU and Coronary Care Unit.
The rest of the year I spent it in one month of General Surgery and one on the Surgical ICU, two months in Pediatric Wards, two months in Obstetrics/Gynecology (wards and delivery room) and one month in the Emergency Room. During this internship we are required to work eight hours daily and to do night shifts every four days.  We performed medical histories and physical exams and established treatment plans under a supervised environment, we also assisted residents in medical and surgical procedures.

Work Title: Intern Physician, Second Year

Supervisor:  Dr. Samuel Gonzalez, Member ACP
I did my second year of internship in El Vigía Hospital and in “Anita Moreno” Regional Hospital in Azuero, both are community hospitals in rural areas.

I did four elective months in Internal Medicine Wards, two months in ICU, two months in general surgery, one month on neurosurgery, one in orthopedics and one in Emergency Room. During this training we recieve hands-on-patient experience, only supervised by attending physicians without other residents so the amount of work for the intern is even more intense.  This experience enhances our capacity for faster diagnosis and for planning a better treatment in a short period of time.  We also participate directly on daily hospital care, medical and surgical procedures and in the outpatient follow up.
